One of the most important aspects of playing piano is to create the most musical performance possible. As a beginner, your child will be encouraged to connect the music they are making to the feelings that the music produces.
As the student grows, we analyze musical form, which gives us even greater insight into proper interpretation. Students are encouraged to gain many perspectives on a piece by listening to different artists and versions or arrangements of the same piece.
We also rely on historical perspective to guide us in realization of ornamentation, tempo, dynamics and articulation. Establishing both a connection to the piece and knowing it’s place in history is pivotal to producing a convincing interpretation.
Course Offerings
Traditional
(All indented) Traditional private piano lessons are offered at 3 levels: Beginner (30-minute), Intermediate (45-minute) and Advanced (60-minute) lessons. Student practice expectations are 5-6 days per week, commensurate with their lesson times.
- Students participating in MMTA events, such as piano and theory exams, at level III or higher are expected to take Intermediate level courses.
- Students participating in MMTA events at level VI or higher are expected to take Advanced level courses.
Adults
- Adult students are also welcome in the studio! I have enjoyed working with adults as beginners, or as the student who has taken some time off (in many cases, that’s years!). Adult students can choose what level of traditional piano lessons will work with their schedules, as well as a curriculum and repertoire based on their interests
Performance Opportunities
I consider performance to be an irreplaceable component of musicianship. That is why I offer several performance opportunities throughout the year.
The core of our performances are studio recitals and UMMF participation. Other opportunities, including competitions and exams, will be presented to students on an individual basis.
- 3 Studio Recitals per year: Fall, Christmas and Spring
- MMTA Piano and Theory Exams, State Contest, Music Bridges Program
- Upper Midwest Music Festival (UMMF)
